In January of 2000, it was proposed that
our church offer assistance to two villages, Pobina and Nahrina in the Cherkaska Oblast. By April, a sub-committee
of the Sr. Chapter of the Ukrainian Orthodox League had formed and developed a project
plan. Pobina and Nahirna are neighboring villages located in central Ukraine about
150
miles south of Kyiv. Pobina, population approximately 1000, is home primarily
for retired
collective farm workers. Nahirna, population approximately 1500, is home to the
current workers
of the Nahirna collective farm.

During 1999 the local farm collective fell into bankruptcy. This condition was the result of poor management, lack of modern farm equipment and farming techniques, and lack of central government financial support. All valuable resources that remained were sold by the former director for personal profit. These events totally undermined the already marginal village economy. Today one cannot use the word economy when discussing these villages because an economy does not exist. The drought conditions that occurred last summer severely damaged personal crops cultivated by the residents. Pensions and salaries of those who are employed are not paid four to six months at a time.

The children of the villages attend
school each day in an effort to obtain an education. The hope for the new generation of Ukrainians
lies in education. By western standards the village school severely lacked those resources and
supplies that enable a faculty to provide an educational experience in tune with the new millenium.
While aiding the school with needed supplies, our Chapter lent additional support to the two villages by increasing the size of the shipping container and filling all available space with humanitarian aid. |
The Sr. Chapter of the Ukrainian Orthodox League of St. Demetrius Cathedral hopes that our "Project Ukraine" has provided the resources and supplies that will enable the school staff meet the requirements of contemporary education. A contemporary education that will supply the hope and skills required by the new generation of Ukrainians as they guide their country through the new millenium. |
