The Divine Names of God The Father
His attributes are
revealed in his Holy Names:
A prayer of David:
I Chronicles
29:10 - 15,
10Wherefore David blessed the LORD before all the
congregation: and David said, Blessed be thou, LORD God of Israel our father,
for ever and ever. 11Thine, O LORD, is the greatness, and the power,
and the glory, and the victory, and the majesty: for all that is in the heaven
and in the earth is thine; thine is the kingdom, O LORD, and thou art exalted
as head above all. 12Both riches and honour come of thee, and thou
reignest over all; and in thine hand is power and might; and in thine hand it
is to make great, and to give strength unto all. 13Now therefore,
our God, we thank thee, and praise thy glorious name. 14But who am
I, and what is my people, that we should be able to offer so willingly after
this sort? for all things come of thee, and of thine own have we given thee. 15For
we are strangers before thee, and sojourners, as were all our fathers: our days
on the earth are as a shadow, and there is none abiding.
Psalm
24
A Psalm of David.
1The earth is the LORD’S, and the fulness
thereof; the world, and they that dwell therein.
2For he hath founded it upon the seas, and established
it upon the floods.
3Who shall ascend into the hill of the LORD? or who
shall stand in his holy place?
4He that hath clean hands, and a pure heart; who hath
not lifted up his soul unto vanity, nor sworn deceitfully.
5He shall receive the blessing from the LORD, and
righteousness from the God of his salvation.
6This is the generation of them that seek him,
that seek thy face, O Jacob.
7Lift up your heads, O ye gates; and be ye lift up, ye
everlasting doors; and the King of glory shall come in.
8Who is this King of glory? The LORD strong and
mighty, the LORD mighty in battle.
9Lift up your heads, O ye gates; even lift them
up, ye everlasting doors; and the King of glory shall come in.
10 Who is this King of glory? The LORD of hosts, he is
the King of glory.
Jesus
prayed to the Father on behalf of his disciples:
John 17:25,26, 25,
O righteous Father, the world hath not known thee: but I have known thee,
and these have known that thou hast sent me.26And I have declared unto them thy name, and will
declare it: that the love wherewith thou hast loved me may be in them,
and I in them.
What does
it mean, “I have declared unto them thy name, and will declare it:”?

The Divine Names And
Titles Of God
A Study of the names of God and His
attributes, authority, and character.
EL, is God and is essentially the Almighty. EL
is Elohim in all His strength and power. It is rendered God as Elohim, but El
is God the Omnipotent. Elohim is God the Creator putting His omnipotence into
operation. Eloah is God who wills and orders all, and Who is to be the one
object of the worship of His people.
El
is the God Who knows all and that performeth all things for his people
(Ps.57;2) and in whom all the Divine attributes are concentrated.
The
Hebrew definitions described in Strong’s Concordance of The Bible: are shown.
ìàÅ eòl ale strength; mighty; Almighty
—God, great, mighty one, power.
Psalm 57:2,
2I will cry unto God most high; unto God that
performeth all things for me.
Elohim, Genesis 1:1 íéä”GàÁ eõloòhòym el-o-heem'

thus, especially with the article) of the supreme God; exceeding,
God,(very) great, judges, mighty. Genesis 1:1,

Eloah, Deuteronomy 32:15 - 17, d—BìàÁ d—GàÁ eõloòahh el-o'-ah, el-o'-ah :—God,
ELOAH is Elohim, Who is to be worshipped.
Eloah is God in connection with His Will rather than His power. The first
occurrence with this name with
worship (Deut. 32: 15-16) Eloah is
essentially “the living God” in contrast to inanimate idols.
Deuteronomy 32:15 - 17, 15But Jeshurun waxed fat,. . . then he
forsook God which made him, and lightly esteemed the Rock of his
salvation.
16They provoked him
to jealousy with strange gods, with abominations provoked they him to
anger.
Elyon, first occurs in Genesis 14: , and is with El (El
Elyon) and is rendered “the most high God.
It is El and Elohim not as the powerful Creator, but
as “the possessor of heaven and earth”.
Elyon, is the Dispenser of God’s blessings to the earth; the blessings
proceeding from a Priest Who is a King upon His throne (Gen. 14.18-22, Zach.
6:13).
Genesis 14: 18-22, 18And
Melchizedek king of Salem brought forth bread and wine: and he was the priest
of the most high God. 19And he blessed him, and said, Blessed be
Abram of the most high God, possessor of heaven and earth: 20And
blessed be the most high God, which hath delivered thine enemies into thy hand.
And he gave him tithes of all. 21And the king of Sodom said unto
Abram, Give me the persons, and take the goods to thyself. 22And
Abram said to the king of Sodom, I have lift up mine hand unto the LORD, the
most high God, the possessor of heaven and earth,
Zechariah
6:13, 13Even he shall build the temple of the LORD; and he
shall bear the glory, and shall sit and rule upon his throne; and he shall be a
priest upon his throne: and the counsel of peace shall be between them both.
Shaddai, Genesis 17.1, écLÛ shadday shad-dah'ee the Almighty:—Almighty.
SHADDAI, is in every instance translated
“Almighty”, it is God not as the source of strength, but of grace; not as
Creator, but as the Giver. Shaddai is the All-bountiful. This title does not
refer to His creative power, but to His power to supply all the needs of His
people. Its first occurrence is in Gen. 17.1 and is used to show Abraham that
He Who called him out to walk alone before Him could supply all his needs.
Genesis 17:1, 1And when Abram was ninety years old and
nine, the LORD appeared to Abram, and said unto him, I am the Almighty
God; walk before me, and be thou perfect.
Shaddai is also the title used in II Cor. 6:18,
where we are called to “come out” in separation from the world.
II
Corinthins 6:15-18, 16And
what agreement hath the temple of God with idols? for ye are the temple of the
living God; as God hath said, I will dwell in them, and walk in them;
and I will be their God, and they shall be my people. 17Wherefore come
out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the
unclean thing; and I will receive you, 18And will be a Father
unto you, and ye shall be my sons and daughters, saith the Lord Almighty.
Adon, is one of three titles (Adon, Adoni and
Adonim), all generally rendered “Lord”, but each has its own peculiar usage and
association. They all denote headship in various aspects. They have to do with
God as “over-lord”.
ADON is the Lord as Ruler in the earth.
ADONAI is the Lord in His relationship to the
earth: and as carrying out His purpose of blessing in the earth. It is almost
equivalent to Jehovah.
ADONIM is the plural of Adon, and a higher
degree as owner, and proprietor.
Adon; is the
Lord as overlord or ruler
Adonai; is the Lord as owner.
Adonim; is the Lord as blesser.

Easton’s Bible Dictionary describes the name of God, but only
presents a few of the names of God that repersents his, nature. In other words,
there were many names used by Israel in the Hebrew language.
God (A. S. and Dutch God; Dan. Gud; Ger. Gott), the name
of the Divine Being. It is the rendering
(1.) of the Hebrew 'El,
from a word meaning to be strong;
(2.) of 'Eloah, plural
'Elohim. The singular form, Eloah, is used only in poetry. The
plural form is more commonly used in all parts of the Bible, The Hebrew word Jehovah
(q.v.), the only other word generally employed to denote the Supreme Being, is
uniformly rendered in the Authorized Version by “Lord,” printed in small capitals. The
existence of God is taken for granted in the Bible. There is nowhere any
argument to prove it. He who disbelieves this truth is spoken of as one devoid
of understanding (Ps. 14:1).
The arguments generally
adduced by theologians in proof of the being of God are:
(1.) The a priori argument,
which is the testimony afforded by reason.
(2.) The a posteriori
argument, by which we proceed logically from the facts of experience to causes.
These arguments are,
(a) The
cosmological, by which it is proved that there must be a First Cause of all
things, for every effect must have a cause.
(b) The
teleological, or the argument from design. We see everywhere the operations of
an intelligent Cause in nature.
(c) The moral
argument, called also the anthropological argument, based on the moral consciousness
and the history of mankind, which exhibits a moral order and purpose which can
only be explained on the supposition of the existence of God. Conscience and
human history testify that “verily
there is a God that judgeth in the earth.”
The attributes of God
are set forth in order by Moses in Ex. 34:6, 7. (see also Deut. 6:4; 10:17;
Num. 16:22; Ex. 15:11; 33:19; Isa. 44:6; Hab. 3:6; Ps. 102:26; Job 34:12.) They
are also systematically classified in Rev. 5:12 and Rev. 7:12.
God’s attributes are
spoken of by some as absolute, i.e., such as belong to his essence as Jehovah,
Jah, etc.; and relative, i.e., such as are ascribed to him with relation to his
creatures. Others distinguish them into communicable, i.e., those which can be
imparted in degree to his creatures: goodness, holiness, wisdom, etc.; and
incommunicable, which cannot be so imparted: independence, immutability,
immensity, and eternity. They are by some also divided into natural attributes,
eternity, immensity, etc.; and moral, holiness, goodness, etc.
Easton’s
Bible Dictionary
From
Smith’s Bible Dictionary:
JAH
Jah
(yah). The shortest form of Jehovah. Used in forming such names as Eli-jah,
Isa-jah, Jerem-jah (Jeremiah). GOD (German Gott). The Hebrew names are;
1. El might as El-SHADDAI God Almighty, (Gen. XIV); EL-ELOHIM God mightier than all gods, God of
gods; EL-BETH-EL The place of the mighty God; Also
is compounds, as AREZE-EL, the cedars of God, that is tall
and strong; and peculiarly in poetry. - 2. ELOAH,
strong; ELOHIM the plural. ELOAH is used only in poetry, and ELOHIM in both poetry and prose.
The
plural is used in Hebrew to enlarge and intensify the idea expressed by the
singular. ELOHIM is not the gods, but is the
strongest of all strong beings, the fullness of divine perfections, the sum of
all the powers of all imaginable gods. There is nothing in this name either for
or against the idea of a trinity. That belongs to the New Testament age. The
unity of God was guarded with the utmost jealousy against idolatrous polytheists
(Deut. 6:4; 39; Is. XLIV:6). The word was often used for the heathen gods and
other ideas of divinity (Ps. 8:6; xevii:1). All true sons of Israel were called
sons of God (Elohim, John x.35). The Cainites claimed to be “sons of God” in
destination from the Sethites, who took the more humble name of “sons of Adam,”
or “sons of the Man” (Gen. Vi.4). The peculiar name of God in relation to the
covenant, is; 3. JEHOVAH; but in reading the Scriptures the Jews
always pronounced the word ADONAI,
which is Lord, The vowel points now in use were not invented for
centuries after the Hebrew ceased to be a living language, so that the true
pronunciation of the name Jehovah was lost, and the word was written YHVH, and pronounced Adonai or Elohim. The
vowel points of Adonai (A
D O N I )
were placed in Jehovah (J
A H O V A H),
but this is not found in the old copies, and not older than about 1500 A. D.
Diodorus Siculus gives the Greek IAO
for the Hebrew JHVH. The meaning of JEHOVAH is underived existence, HE IS or I AM BECAUSE I
AM, The God of Abraham,
of grace, of truth, and love; self-existence, eternity. Elohim is God in
nature, Jehovah is God in grace. The word Jehovah is supposed to
mean YAHU, joy; VAH, pain- The God of good and evil. 5. KURIOS Lord (Matt. 1:20)
