History of Claysville

Two Histories in One

The present United Presbyterian Church of Claysville, Pennsylvania

The photo you see above is our lovely 'Small Town' Church at 134 Wayne Street,
Claysville, Pa 15323. The year 1903 is carved deep in the corner stone that you see near top
of steps beside our front door. This web site is dedicated to this church, its congregation and
the hundreds of folks who make up its History. We would like to write about events here and
the  many dedicated people who have served God, their fellow man and the community. To
accomplish this we have pulled together many past records to present an accurate picture.
Cover Photos of church however have not always been the emphasis as written below.
A New Beginning
( written by Rev Dave Persons 1972)
        Music   Morning Has Broken
1972 marks a new beginning in the life of Claysville Presbyterian Christians.  1972 is the first full year of operation as one consolidated church. On July 18, 1971, the two congregations were officially joined together in a special service conducted by Washington Presbytery. Since that time, a new pastor has been called and the former groups have worked consistently to combine two programs into one. Our Sunday Worship services are conducted in the Wayne Street Sanctuary  while a mid-week, Wednesday Worship and fellowship program is conducted in the Greene Street building, only one block away.
What has happened here is the pooling together of separate resources into one body of Christ, not just the closure of one church and the opening of a new larger one located on Wayne Street.  Just where the future leads us we are not sure; we are sure that God is with us and that as we listen, wait, and work, His will will be revealed to us, members of His mighty Church.
Therefore we chose to display on our cover, not a building or buildings, but people.  [See Photo] For it is the people who are the church, and the kind, use and location of buildings must always remain as dispensable times to the greater task of ministering to the souls of mankind in Christ's name. For over 150 years, this has been the goal of these two groups, both having their beginnings in totally different physical surroundings. So now we stand again on the threshold of a new beginning. May God Himself enable us to be His ambassadors to the needy world in our generation !

These are the two churches that merged in 1971, to form present congregation.
