[Up]

John Melvin, a son, tells this incident about his mother Sarah and the trip back to Salt Lake City:  “My mother had only enough money to pay for one child’s ticket to Salt Lake City, but, she put all 4 of us on the train anyway and did she ever get in trouble when we reached Salt Lake.”  It would appear from this experience, and others, that Sarah Ann Eliza Moore had a lot of grit and did what she knew she had to do.  Her husband, John, dying at an early age, forced her to be very resourceful the rest of her life.[j]

Upon arriving in Salt Lake City, the family stayed at a home on 4th South and 9th East.  Later, they spent many years living at 620 South and 6th East in Salt Lake City, Salt Lake, Utah.

During these years, John went from job to job working as a steam engineer.  This entailed taking care of the coal furnaces, or whatever produced the steam for the radiators in the big buildings, etc.  Some of his places of employment were the Wilson Hotel, the St. Marks Hospital, the Boston Building, the Hotel Newhouse, and a large ice plant.  Having lived in Salt Lake for many years, I am aware that all of these places were large and well known establishments.  John also worked in a potash plant in Wendover, Utah in the same profession.

John and Sarah did well enough financially through the years that they were able to own their home, other real estate, and eventually buy a larger two story home that renters could live in.
