Sarah Ann Eliza Moore ~ About Age 12

Sarah Ann attended the Old Social Hall School in Salt Lake City when she was about 4 years old.  We know that she attended third grade but know nothing concerning the rest of her schooling.  She used to attend a Steven singing class at 25 cents a month at the Council House where the higher ups used to go to get instruction.  There were several of these classes and they sometimes had the opportunity of singing concerts in the famed Salt Lake Tabernacle.  Loving literature, Sarah was a bookworm reading everything she could get her hands on.  The first novel she read was “Jane Eyre” borrowed from a friend.  In her adult years, during World War I, she would go to the Red Cross to knit sweaters and socks for the men.  She spent most of her life in Salt Lake City, Utah.[e]

Continuing with John, the next knowledge we have of his life appears in the 1890 Salt Lake City, Utah Directory:  “Olorenshaw, John, setter, Brains brickyard, boards 1181 2nd”.  The same Directories of 1896 and 1897 show:  “Olorenshaw, John, laborer, residence 111 U Street”.  These are the first indications of the kinds of work John did and where he lived.[f]

The 1900 Salt Lake City, Salt Lake, Utah Census[g] shows the following:  “Dwelling 103 Family 110, 111 U Street, Own Home, Olorenshaw, John, 33 yr, Day Laborer, Born Aug 1866 England, Immigrated 1872, 28 yr U.S., Parents: England Sarah Ann, 27 yr, Md 11 years, Children 4/Living 4, Born June 1872 Germany, Immigrated 1874, 26 yr U.S. Parents:  Germany.  Louis T., 10 yr, at school, born Jan 1890, Utah.  Lillian E., 8 yr, at school, born Jan 1892, Utah.  Melvin J., 6 yr, born Mar 1894, Utah.  Ralph S., 4 yr, born Jan 1896, Utah.”  It is interesting to note that the information given about Sarah’s birth in the 1900 Census lists her birth in Germany as well as her parents.

During this period of time, John also made rocking chairs and other kinds of chairs with cane seats.  Sarah did washing, as many well to do people lived in this area and she was able to build up a good business.
