Little is known of John and his family until 1871 when his father, Timothy Olorenshaw, immigrated to the United States alone.   Timothy worked for awhile and then sent for his family.  John emigrated 4 September 1872 from Liverpool, Lancashire, England with his mother, Sarah, and brothers and sisters Timothy, Elizabeth, Thomas, Jane, Sarah, Joseph and Bessy on the ship Minnesota.  The ship arrived in New York, New York on the 16 September 1872.[b]  They came ashore on the 17 of September where they met their father, Timothy.  The family then traveled to Salt Lake City, Utah where they lived for several years.
